Valentine’s Day.  A day that can be filled with either fun and joy or pain and sorrow depending on your circumstances.  Of course, being practical as I am, I see it as a money maker for card companies, florists and restaurants.  I tell my husband that I don’t want red roses on a day when everyone else gets them and you have to pay twice as much.  And I’d rather have a card on a random day than an obligatory one…but that’s just me!  However, I wouldn’t turn down chocolate or red velvet cake.

My practicality has not always been my sentiment.  I loved Valentine’s Day growing up.  Mom would make red jell-o in a heart shaped mold and maybe even a red velvet cake (heart shaped, too, of course).  We’d have heart themed napkins and, of course, candy.  I am willing to bet money that right now there is a small bouquet of some sort of Valentine-themed flowers on my parents’ kitchen table.  Oh, and what fun it was to give Valentine’s to all the kids in school.  We would giggle over the little sayings on the candy hearts—“Be Mine” or “You’re Cute!”

Even if you are in an awesome relationship the fact is that human love is flawed and will most likely disappoint at times.  Thankfully there is a love that never fails (1 Corinthians 13:8).  The Bible itself is ultimately a love letter from God to us.  In His Word, we read what God has communicated to us using over forty human authors.  Throughout history God has made a way back to him for His wayward children.  What greater expression of love could there be than offering His only Son to pay the penalty of sin for all of humanity.  This is best expressed in John 3:16.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”  John 3:16 NIV

While all of Scripture is a love letter, there are many references to God’s unfailing love.  Here are 2 examples:

“Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you.  Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.”  Psalm 143:8 NIV {emphasis mine}

“Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,’ says the LORD, who has compassion on you.”  Isaiah 54:10 NIV {emphasis mine}

So no matter where you rank on the “romance scale” today I hope you will find comfort in the knowledge that the love of the Lord is unfailing and will never disappoint or hurt you.

Have a great Valentine’s Day!
