If you are not familiar with the word “thine” don’t feel too bad….neither is Word or Outlook. The software wants me to change it to Thane or Thune. No thanks. “Thine Be the Glory” is the title of one of my new favorite hymns because of my Bible study this year. This hymn was one of the nine that we taught to the children I was honored to lead with eleven other children’s leaders. We opened each class night with Assembly time where we sang two hymns and reinforced the aim for the evening.
Last Tuesday night was the last class for our students. We had a little time of fellowship with goodies and an opportunity for each child to share what the study of the Book of John and 1 John meant to them. They could pick a favorite scripture memory verse, principle, attribute of God, or a hymn. One very adorable first grader picked “Thine Be The Glory” as his favorite hymn and was disappointed we hadn’t sung it that night in Assembly. So we sang it in our fellowship time. We sang the first verse, mainly by memory. What joy it brought to my heart to hear these precious children from grades 1 through 12 singing praise to the Lord.
As I was leaving work on Thursday, I could hear church bells/chimes playing a hymn. At first I couldn’t make it out but then it hit me….it was “Thine Be The Glory”. I stopped, listened and looked heavenward, so thankful for the reminder of God’s glory. Here are the lyrics to this hymn:
Thine Be The Glory
Words by Rev. Edmund Louis Budry (1854-1932) Music by Georg Friedrich Handel (1685-1759) Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son;
Endless is the victory, Thou o’er death hast won;
Angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away
Kept the folded grave clothes where Thy body lay.
Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son,
Endless is the victory, Thou o’er death hast won.Lo! Jesus meet us, risen from the tomb;
Lovingly He greets us, scatters fear and gloom;
Let the church with gladness, hymns of triumph sing;
For her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting.Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son,
Endless is the victory, Thou o’er death hast won.No more we doubt Thee, glorious Prince of life;
Life naught without Thee; aid us in our strife;
Make us more than conquerors, through Thy deathless love:
Bring us safe through Jordan to Thy home above.Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son,
Endless is the victory, Thou o’er death hast won.
As I think over the year and what I’ve learned it is very overwhelming at how much God has taught me. Hearing this hymn playing in the local church steeple made me stop and think about how much more connected I am to the Lord through this study. It is very hard to explain but through several situations that have occurred in the past couple of months, I have sensed God’s presence more than ever. His presence is the only thing that has gotten me through. When I was tempted to fear I knew in my heart that I needed to trust. His faithfulness, mercy and grace are far more amazing than I can fathom and far more than I deserve.
By the way, “thine” is a pronoun, and if you haven’t figured it out, it refers to Jesus.
“For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.”
Romans 11:36 NIV
Have a great day!
