Peace.  What a power packed word.  World peace.  Peace and quiet.  Being at peace.  I greet you in peace (Shalom).  Passing the peace.  Peace on earth good will toward men.  Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.  I do not give to you as the world gives.  Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”  John 14:27 as spoken by Jesus.

This peace that Jesus speaks about is assurance and comfort to the disciples.  He was about to be crucified and taken from them.  Jesus knew what they would be facing.  There would be many trials and persecution coming because of their faith.  They would suffer greatly by spreading the Good News—most eventually would be martyred.

Jesus’ peace is not like what the world calls peace.  The world says that peace is a lack of unsettling circumstances.  Jesus spoke of the promised Holy Spirit that would be in each disciple after His resurrection, ascension and would be given at Pentecost (Acts 2).  The Holy Spirit also indwells each person who has put his/her faith in Jesus Christ as Savior today.

The peace that Jesus gives is so much more valuable because it is real—the concept of world peace makes you feel warm and fuzzy but is unrealistic in a fallen world.  It is also unrealistic to think that as a Christian our lives will ever be free from problems or trials.  The difference as believers is that we can have that inner peace that Jesus promised in John 14:27.

The following verse may sound familiar because the preceding verses (4-6) were used in my musings on worry.

“And the peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 4:7 NIV

My prayer is that you have this kind of peace.  If not, what are you waiting for?  Run, don’t walk, to Jesus—He is waiting with open arms to give you the peace you desire.

Have a great day and Shalom!

Melanie

P.S. Shalom is a Jewish greeting and farewell meaning peace.
