When school started this year my brother-in-law made a deal with my nephews. If they learned everything the first day they would not have to go back. At dinner that evening Stephen asked the boys “What is the distance between us and the sun?”. Of course they did not know. Quickly my younger nephew asked, “What is tomorrow’s question?”
Does this sound like how you approach your faith? Do you want to find out all the answers quickly so that you can just be finished with it? Just like my nephew needs to go to school and take the time to study to get ahead in life, so do we need to spend the time with God to grow in our faith. Our relationship with God requires time spent with Him just like it would with any human relationship.
The awesome thing to realize is that the Creator of the Universe wants a relationship with you! You may wonder how that could be possible. The best way to grow close to Him is by reading His Word (the Bible) every day, spending time in prayer (including praising and thanking him….not just your wish list), and spending time with other believers. Many times we say we don’t have that kind of time but I challenge you to look at your calendar and your check book to see how you prioritize your time and resources.
I recently began an in-depth study on the Book of John. As of this week I will also be teaching the class to 5th & 6th graders. One of the themes of John is the relationship aspect that Jesus wants with us. You may be seeing this theme woven into my “musings” throughout this year.
Are you willing to make the effort to get to know God? I think you will find it is well worth it!
“Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.” 2 Peter 1:2 (NIV)
Have a great day!
